Introduction

Hi, my name is Tiffany Lee. I decided I wanted to learn Japanese, because Japan has always been a country that fascinated me with it's language and culture. So, since I still had at least two years left in Columbia, I decided to enter First Year Japanese as a Junior. It's a bit late and I regret not being able to go beyond Second Year Japanese, but I'm hopeful that this would set the foundation for me in the future and I can learn the language by myself. I hope one day to be able to visit Japan for the first time in the near future.

Currently, the pace has been the biggest challenge for me. Only four weeks in, we are already on lesson 5 and we haven't slowed done whatsoever. The vocabulary doesn't stop and I find myself struggling to keep up with the pace on top of other school work that I have. But still, I found myself having learned a lot and that I can actually understand one or two lines in conversations by native speakers. Also, I can read hiragana now and I'm so excited to finish katakana.

I look forward to the rest of this semester for this class, honestly.

My motivational speech every morning.

  1. HaHaHa Tiffany, you are not alone. I am also a junior so I will only get to finish Second Year Japanese. I also find the pace is a bit fast, but I feel that it is totally worth it, as we can fully read hiragana and are moving on to Katakana next. So while it may be fast, it's cool that we know so much though it has been just a few weeks.

    1. Agreed! It's been a fun time so far and I think the fact that I can (at this point) read katakana is pretty amazing. Still, so much left to learn so hopefully, in the two years we have left, we can learn even more (to the point of being able to survive being stranded in Japan, haha).

  3. I think it's never too late to start learning something you might enjoy! I completely agree with the pace, however; I think that it might be a commonality most Japanese classes possess. I find most of my time taken up with Japanese homework >.< But I am also excited to learn even more! I hope that you continue to do so even after you graduate. :D Thank you for sharing why you chose Japanese!

    1. The homework can be hefty, haha. I haven't been able to catch a break, really. But it's doable which I really appreciate! I'm definitely going to try and continue this when I graduate (and finally travel to Japan!)
